Dementia
Our Approach
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, we offer specialist neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation for individuals with suspected or diagnosed dementia. Our approach is holistic, compassionate, and person-centred. We conduct detailed cognitive assessments to understand the nature and extent of memory and thinking difficulties, identify the type or pattern of dementia, and recommend practical strategies for support. We also work closely with families, carers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that care is coordinated, realistic, and aligned with the individual’s values and needs. Our focus is not only on cognitive decline but also on emotional wellbeing, identity, and dignity throughout the journey.
What are the benefits of a neuropsychological assessment for dementia?
A neuropsychological assessment provides a comprehensive picture of how dementia is affecting specific areas of cognition such as memory, attention, language, and executive functioning. It can help confirm a diagnosis, differentiate between dementia types, or assess the impact on everyday life. This information is invaluable for care planning, legal decision-making (e.g. mental capacity), and emotional preparation. Early assessment can also detect mild cognitive impairment, enabling proactive support before difficulties escalate.

Can families be involved in the process?
Absolutely. Family members and carers are essential partners in care. We offer joint consultations, feedback sessions, and practical advice on how best to support a loved one living with dementia. This might include communication strategies, daily routines, behavioural management, or accessing appropriate community services. We also offer carer support, as caring for someone with dementia can be emotionally and physically demanding.

Is neuropsychological input helpful throughout the course of dementia?
Yes. While assessment is often conducted at diagnosis, we can provide ongoing input as needs evolve-offering reviews, psychoeducation, decision-making support, and emotional adjustment counselling. Neuropsychological insight is particularly valuable when changes occur in behaviour, mood, or function, or when care transitions (e.g. hospital to home) are being considered.
Questions our clients ask
Frequently asked questions
You may have lots of questions and that’s understandable. We have provided some answers below to frequently asked questions but if you’re still unsure about something do get in contact with us.
What’s the difference between dementia and normal ageing?
While some forgetfulness is common with age, dementia involves more persistent and progressive decline that interferes with daily life. It often includes difficulties with language, problem-solving, planning, or personality changes—not just memory lapses.
Can anything be done to slow dementia down?
While there’s currently no cure, there are many ways to improve quality of life and potentially delay progression. This includes medication, lifestyle changes, cognitive stimulation, emotional support, and structured routines. Our clinic provides personalised guidance on these strategies.
How do I know if a loved one needs a formal assessment?
If you’ve noticed significant changes in memory, confusion, or day-to-day functioning, a neuropsychological assessment can offer clarity. Early diagnosis enables better planning, access to services, and appropriate medical or therapeutic support.
