An Initial Neuropsychological Consultation at The London Neurocognitive Clinic
For many individuals experiencing changes in memory, thinking, or emotional wellbeing, the journey toward clarity often begins with a neuropsychological consultation. At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, this first step is carefully designed to be supportive, informative, and person-centred. Whether you’ve been referred by a medical professional or are seeking help independently, understanding what to expect from an initial consultation can ease uncertainty and empower you to take the next step with confidence.
Why Have a Neuropsychological Consultation?
A neuropsychological consultation provides an opportunity to explore how cognitive, emotional, and behavioural factors may be affecting your daily life. This could be in the context of a known condition-such as brain injury, stroke, or neurological illness or more functional and complex presentations, such as Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), or mental health challenges that impact thinking, concentration, and emotional regulation.
This consultation is not only about identifying problems. It is also about recognising your strengths, setting goals, and exploring practical recommendations that can guide further support or treatment.
What Happens During the Consultation?
An initial consultation typically lasts around two hours and is conducted by a clinical psychologist specialising in neuropsychology. These professionals are trained to assess the links between brain function and everyday thinking, emotions, and behaviours.
The consultation includes:
- A brief clinical interview to explore medical history, current concerns, and your personal goals.
- Completion of standardised self-report measures, which may cover areas such as perceived cognitive difficulties, emotional wellbeing, and quality of life.
This structured yet sensitive approach helps to build a clear picture of your current situation and identify the most helpful next steps-whether that’s further assessment, therapeutic support, or neurorehabilitation planning. We do not offer cognitive assessments during the initial consultation. This is not an oversight but a part of our person-centred approach.
Cognitive assessments are most valuable when both the clinician and the client agree that the timing is right. We prioritise shared decision-making and take time to ensure that any assessment aligns with your goals, needs, and current capacity. This approach empowers clients and ensures that the support provided is meaningful and tailored.
Tailored to Your Needs
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, we understand that each individual’s experience is unique. That’s why we offer consultations not only at our clinic in Harley Street, but also remotely (via secure video link) or in some cases at your home, depending on need and suitability.
We encourage clients to bring any glasses, hearing aids, or medication they may require during the session, to ensure the process is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
What Happens After the Assessment?
Following your consultation, you will receive a brief written summary report, typically within two weeks. This report is designed to highlight key insights from the assessment and may be shared (with your consent) with your GP, referring professional, or other members of your care team.
This feedback helps inform decisions about further investigations, therapy options, or broader neurorehabilitation planning. It also serves as a baseline for tracking progress over time.
A Compassionate, Collaborative First Step
Neuropsychological consultations are not simply clinical checklists. They are collaborative conversations, designed to help you feel heard, understood, and supported at a time when things may feel unclear or overwhelming. Whether you’re experiencing difficulties for the first time or navigating the longer-term effects of a condition, this session is the start of a pathway tailored to your needs.
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, we are committed to making your first steps into neuropsychological care both welcoming and informative. Our initial neuropsychological consultations are designed to be comprehensive, respectful, and practical, providing the clarity and direction needed to guide your care.
