Psychiatric Assessment
Our Approach
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, our psychiatric assessment service is designed to provide a comprehensive, structured understanding of an individual’s mental health. We assess a range of conditions including ADHD, psychosis, bipolar disorder, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders, helping to clarify diagnosis, understand both cognitive and emotional needs, and inform appropriate next steps.
What is our view to a psychiatric assessment at The London Neurocognitive Clinic?
Our approach to psychiatric assessment is thorough, collaborative, and grounded in clinical expertise. We recognise that mental health presentations are often complex, with overlapping symptoms and contributing factors affecting both cognitive functioning and emotional wellbeing.
During the assessment, we explore an individual’s current difficulties alongside their developmental, psychological, and medical history. This allows us to build a detailed clinical formulation that goes beyond labels, helping to understand not just what the difficulty is, but how it has developed, how it impacts thinking, behaviour, and emotional regulation, and what may be maintaining it.
Where appropriate, we work alongside other professionals and integrate findings within a broader neuropsychological or multidisciplinary context. Our aim is to provide clarity, direction, and a structured foundation for future care.

What does a psychiatric assessment involve?
A psychiatric assessment typically includes a detailed clinical interview, during which we explore symptoms, history, and current functioning. This includes understanding patterns in mood, thoughts, behaviour, attention, memory, and emotional responses.
Depending on the individual’s needs, the assessment may also involve reviewing previous reports, medical records, or input from family members or other professionals.
The outcome of the assessment is a clear clinical understanding, which may include diagnostic impressions, formulation, and recommendations that address both cognitive and emotional aspects of an individual’s presentation.

How can a psychiatric assessment help?
A comprehensive psychiatric assessment can provide:
- Greater clarity around symptoms and diagnosis
- Understanding of underlying cognitive and emotional factors
- Guidance on appropriate treatment pathways
- Support in decision-making about next steps
- A structured report that can be shared with other professionals if needed
