Neuropsychiatric Assessment
Our Approach
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, our neuropsychiatric assessment service is designed for individuals whose psychiatric presentation may be linked to neurological conditions or brain-based factors. We assess presentations that sit at the intersection of neurology and psychiatry, including psychiatric symptoms following acquired brain injury, epilepsy-related mood and behavioural changes, neuroinflammatory and autoimmune psychiatric conditions, functional neurological disorder (FND), and neuropsychiatric features associated with neurodegenerative conditions. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding that integrates both neurological and psychiatric perspectives, clarifying diagnosis and informing appropriate next steps.
What does a neuropsychiatric assessment involve?
A neuropsychiatric assessment includes a detailed clinical interview exploring the nature, onset, and course of psychiatric symptoms, with particular attention to their relationship with any known or suspected neurological factors. We explore mood, cognition, behaviour, personality changes, and emotional regulation, and consider how these relate to underlying brain function.
The assessment draws on a comprehensive history including neurological investigations, neuroimaging findings, medical records, and previous clinical reports. Where helpful, collateral information from family members or other professionals may also be sought.
The outcome is a clear clinical formulation that integrates neurological and psychiatric perspectives, which may include diagnostic impressions, an account of how brain-based factors are contributing to the presentation, and tailored recommendations for ongoing management and support.

How is a neuropsychiatric assessment different from a standard psychiatric assessment?
While a psychiatric assessment focuses primarily on mental health symptoms and their psychological and social context, a neuropsychiatric assessment specifically examines the relationship between brain function and psychiatric presentation. It is designed for situations where neurological factors may be driving, shaping, or complicating an individual’s mental health difficulties.
This means the assessment places particular emphasis on the timing and pattern of symptom onset in relation to neurological events, the nature of any cognitive changes, and how brain-based processes may be contributing to emotional, behavioural, or personality disturbance. It draws on neurological history and investigations in a way that a standard psychiatric assessment typically would not.

What can a neuropsychiatric assessment offer?
A comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment can provide:
- Clarity where psychiatric symptoms may be driven or complicated by neurological factors
- An integrated understanding that bridges neurology and psychiatry
- Identification of neuropsychiatric conditions that may have been previously unrecognised
- Guidance on appropriate management pathways, including specialist referrals
- A structured clinical report that can inform multidisciplinary care planning
