Adult Neuropsychiatric Assessment
Our Approach
At The London Neurocognitive Clinic, our adult neuropsychiatric assessment service provides a detailed clinical evaluation for individuals aged 18 and above whose psychiatric presentation may be connected to neurological factors. We assess presentations including psychiatric and behavioural changes following acquired brain injury, epilepsy-related mood and emotional disturbance, neuropsychiatric features of neurodegenerative conditions, autoimmune and neuroinflammatory psychiatric presentations, and functional neurological disorder (FND). Our aim is to provide an integrated understanding that connects brain function with psychiatric experience, clarifying diagnosis and guiding appropriate next steps.
What is involved in an adult neuropsychiatric assessment involve?
An adult neuropsychiatric assessment includes a detailed clinical interview exploring psychiatric symptoms, cognitive changes, and behavioural presentation, with particular attention to the relationship between these and any known or suspected neurological factors.
We take a thorough history covering neurological investigations, neuroimaging findings, medical background, medication, substance use, and relevant life events. Where helpful, the assessment may also draw on collateral information from family members, partners, or other professionals, as well as a review of previous clinical reports and records.
The outcome of the assessment is a clear clinical formulation that integrates neurological and psychiatric perspectives, which may include diagnostic impressions, an analysis of how brain-based factors are shaping the presentation, and tailored recommendations for ongoing management, treatment, and support.

When might an adult neuropsychiatric assessment be appropriate?
An adult neuropsychiatric assessment may be appropriate for individuals who are experiencing psychiatric or behavioural changes that may be connected to neurological conditions or events. This includes individuals who have noticed shifts in mood, motivation, personality, or emotional regulation following a brain injury, stroke, or neurological diagnosis, as well as those experiencing psychiatric symptoms alongside cognitive difficulties where the underlying cause remains unclear.
It may also be helpful for individuals who have not responded as expected to standard psychiatric treatment, where an unrecognised neurological contribution may be a factor.

What can an adult neuropsychiatric assessment provide?
A comprehensive adult neuropsychiatric assessment can provide:
- Clarity around psychiatric symptoms that may be linked to neurological conditions or events
- An integrated understanding of how brain function, cognition, and mental health interact in adulthood
- Identification of neuropsychiatric conditions that may have been previously unrecognised or misattributed
- Guidance on appropriate management and treatment pathways, including specialist referrals
- A structured clinical report that can be shared with other professionals to support coordinated care
